Scaling and polishing in Guwahati.
A deeper clean than any brush can give.
Scaling and polishing is a professional clean that removes the hardened tartar a toothbrush cannot shift, above and just below the gum line, and then polishes the teeth smooth — for anyone with bleeding gums, bad breath or stains, and as a routine visit every six months.
The details, thoughtfully explained ↓The essentials
- Does it hurt?
- Scaling is usually comfortable. You feel vibration and a cool water spray, and inflamed gums can feel tender or bleed a little during the clean. If your teeth are sensitive or the tartar runs below the gums, say so — the area can be numbed first. Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days afterwards is common and settles on its own.
- How long does it take?
- Usually a single visit of 30 to 45 minutes. Heavy tartar, or cleaning that has to go deeper below the gums, can take two visits.
- What does it cost?
- Scaling and polishing is priced after the dentist has seen how much tartar there is and whether cleaning below the gum line is needed. EMI / instalments are available.
Who needs it
- Your gums bleed when you brush or floss
- Bad breath keeps coming back, even with mouthwash
- There is a yellow or brown crust along the gum line
- Tea, tamul-paan or tobacco has stained your teeth
- It has been more than six months since your last clean

Plaque — the soft film that builds up on teeth every day — hardens into tartar when it is not brushed away, often within days. Once it has hardened, no toothbrush, toothpaste or mouthwash will lift it.
Tartar is rough, so more plaque sticks to it, and it sits right against the gum. That is what keeps the gum inflamed and the breath stale. Scaling takes it off; polishing leaves the surface smooth, so new plaque has less to hold on to.
Bleeding gums are the reason to come, not a reason to stop brushing
Gums that bleed are inflamed, almost always because of plaque and tartar at the gum line. At this stage — gingivitis — the damage is reversible.
After a clean, the bleeding usually settles within one to two weeks of careful brushing. If it does not, or the gums have started to pull away from the teeth, the problem has gone deeper and the gums and bone are checked before anything else is planned. Complex cases are handled by a panel of specialists working as a team, under one treatment plan.
Does scaling loosen the teeth? No.
It is one of the most common worries, and it has things the wrong way round. Scaling removes deposits; it does not remove enamel or weaken the teeth.
What people notice afterwards — small gaps between the teeth, or a little sensitivity — was already there, hidden under tartar that was filling the space where the gum had receded. The tartar was holding plaque against the gum, not holding the teeth in place.
Stains: what polishing removes, and what it does not
Polishing lifts surface stains from tea, tamul-paan, coffee and tobacco, which is why teeth often look brighter afterwards.
It does not change the natural colour of the tooth. For teeth whiter than they are underneath, the treatment is teeth whitening, which works best on teeth that have just been cleaned.

20–40 minutes
Tartar is removed from above and just below the gum line with an ultrasonic scaler — a fine vibrating tip with a water spray — and hand instruments.
